The Difficulties of Working on Churches
12 May
Access Maintenance Solutions have been providing steeplejack services for over 40 years. We carry out work on a whole host of structures, both commercial and domestic. But one area we tend to specialise in, is churches.
Churches are wonderful structures to work on. They are rich in history, tradition and craftsmanship. We always get excited when we get called out to carry out repair work on a Church spire. In our 40 years of service we have repaired and maintained dozens of churches in the Yorkshire area.
However, they are far from easy. Churches come with their own set of challenges that have to be considered when they are worked on. Learning how to work with and around these challenges is something that takes years to learn.
Age is the first factor to consider when carrying our repair work on Churches. Age, in this case, can be viewed as a weak and dangerous structure to work on. It also means that each building will have small idiosyncrasies left over from the people that built it – they didn’t have the same regulations that we have today.
Churches are often large structures. Not all of them are long, but the vast majority are very, very tall. They are also awkwardly shaped. This means that a specialist skillset has to be drawn on when cleaning or repairing churches. Thankfully, Access Maintenance Solutions specialises in high and awkward access roofing repairs and maintenance. We have worked for years as steeplejacks and so know the ins-and-outs of tall and awkward structures like no other.
The size and age of the churches adds up to more time having to spend on the job. If the work is to be done correctly, and to an adequate standard, then time must be taken over it. This does ultimately mean that the church may be clad in scaffolding for a while, but in the long run the parishioners will benefit from it.
